Details of the post 

The Director will be responsible for further strengthening the Academy's  international networks and academic reputation through shaping it into an  internationally competitive institution. The candidate should be deeply committed  to promoting excellence in all aspects of the Academy's academic activities  including teaching, research, and knowledge transfer. The appointee will ensure  alignment with international practices and standards of the field and current  trends. A candidate who can further the research excellence of the Academy and  promote transdisciplinary teaching and research in the areas such as arts and  technology is highly favored. 

The desired candidate should be a world-leading artist and scholar who can  demonstrate a track record of successful academic leadership in a large  comprehensive public university setting, display high esteem, outstanding  research impact/creative excellence in terms of its reach and significance, and a  sustained record of significant professional achievement. 

While the Directorship will demand significant time commitment to management  and administrative duties, it is expected that the appointee will hold a concurrent  academic appointment in the Academy and contribute to research, academic  planning and development/teaching, and other scholarly activities.

 

Appointment Terms 

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The  appointment will normally be made on a three-year term, and renewable subject  to review and mutual agreement. SCHOOL OF CREATIVE ARTS 

The School of Creative Arts (SCA) is well poised to disrupt the creative practice  and art education in film, music and visual arts. A new framework of education  and research is needed for artists to "think" futurity. Rooted in liberal arts ethos  and transdisciplinary inquiries, the new school aims to interrogate the infinite acts  of human creativity, reassess the roles of arts in our time, and invent new artistic  opportunities for the future. 

SCA is comprised of three well-established academic units, namely the Academy  of Film, Academy of Music, and Academy of Visual Arts, offering a range of  undergraduate degree programmes, master's programmes, and research  postgraduate programmes across the three Academies. ACADEMY OF VISUAL ARTS

Professor / Associate Professor / Professor of Practice in Studio Art or New  Media Art - multiple positions (PR0389/22-23) 

The Academy of Visual Arts is looking for outstanding applicants for multiple  tenure-track faculty positions as Professor Associate Professor, and Professor of  Practice, specialising in Studio Art or New Media Art. Preference will be given to  senior academics appointable to the rank of full Professor. 

The appointees will be expected to enrich AVA's teaching, research, and practice  of contemporary art in the relevant area(s) of expertise, and to independently  operate at the professional level in a fully equipped studio environment. Initially, primary teaching focus will be on delivering undergraduate courses in relevant  areas as well as on supervision of individual student projects at undergraduate  and postgraduate levels. All AVA faculty members are expected to be active  researchers and prominent leaders in their field of expertise. They will also be  expected to be an active member in Academy-and-School-level administration. 

Applicants should have at least a master's degree (ideally a PhD degree) in a  relevant discipline, and be able to demonstrate their keen interests in teaching,  practice, and research by their academic, professional, and personal track  records. Records of successful grant applications or project funding bids will be  considered as an advantage. 

Applicants for the positions of Professor of Practice should possess not less than  15 years of experience in related professional fields.

The Academy of Film (http://af.hkbu.edu.hk/) is dedicated to providing cinematic  arts and creative media education to cultivate talented professionals capable of  contributing to Hong Kong's arts and cultural industries. For the last four  decades, it has been the chief provider of cinema, television, and media  education in Hong Kong. It is Hong Kong's flagship film school in terms of size,  breadth of programmes, distinguished alumni, and strong industry connections. 

The Academy has a strong teaching and research team comprised of 18 full-time  and over 50 part-time / adjunct faculty members. The expertise of our faculty  spans the following areas: film and media studies, film and television production,  script writing, post-production, and acting for global screen.

The appointee is expected to teach a range of subjects covering film theory and  criticism, the history of cinema, digital media, and television. The ideal candidate  should demonstrate expertise in new media (including topics such as platform  studies, AI, Digital Divides, E-commerce, Arts Tech) and/or in media industry  studies. Knowledge in East Asian/Southeast Asian film and media studies is a  plus, but not a requirement. 

Applicants should have a PhD degree in a relevant field and should have a  strong publication record and excellent track record in teaching. The appointee  should also have experience in curriculum design and postgraduate supervision,  and demonstrate potential of academic leadership.

1) Directing and/or Scriptwriting 

2) Production Design (Art Direction) and Editing 

The appointees are expected to: 

a) Deliver high-quality teaching at higher diploma, undergraduate, and/or  postgraduate level(s); 

b) Supervise student projects and experiential learning; 

c) Develop creative teaching and learning-related courses and projects that are  theoretically informed and can contribute to knowledge advancement and/or  inform teaching; 

d) Develop course content based on the latest industrial practices and production  workflows; 

e) Work on curriculum development, student recruitment, internship placement,  collaboration with the industry, etc.; and 

f) Perform administrative duties as assigned*. 

*Successful candidates with relevant programme management experience will  also be considered for concurrent appointment as programme directors at higher  diploma, undergraduate and/or postgraduate level(s).

 

In addition to the expertise associated with each position, candidates should  have: 

a) A master's or MFA degree or above in a related discipline; an MFA degree in  film production is preferred; 

b) Not less than 15 years (for Professor of Practice) and 8 years (for Associate  Professor of Practice) of post-qualification experience in related professional  fields; 

c) Substantial professional knowledge and experience in the following areas: i. Directing and / or Scriptwriting; and 

ii. Production Design (Art Direction) and Editing; 

d) Excellent command of both spoken and written English and Chinese  (Putonghua); 

e) Evidence of quality teaching in the following areas: 

i. Directing and / or Scriptwriting; and

f) A robust track record of relevant professional experience, notable and  recognised professional credits, or awards are advantages.

ACADEMY OF MUSIC 

The Academy of Music (https://mus.hkbu.edu.hk/) has rapidly emerged as one of  the leading institutions in Hong Kong, providing a rigorous music curriculum. The  Academy currently has 16 full-time and over 100 part-time/adjunct faculty  members. Following HKBU's rich liberal arts tradition, the Academy has  combined different forms of music-making and creativity with research that  explores theories, histories, education, music technology, and cultures of music.  The Academy has also brought together music-making and scholarly research in  composition, technologies, musicology, music education, and performance. 

The Academy is now seeking outstanding applicants for multiple faculty  positions in the following areas of expertise: 

Music Psychology/Social and Applied Psychology of Music  (Professor/Associate Professor (tenure track) - multiple positions)  (PR0390/22-23) 

The Academy is looking for qualified candidates in the area of neurocognitive  studies, which will be fully supported by a state-of-the-art neuroimaging facility to  be launched in June 2023. This major research infrastructure is established to  promote individual and collaborative research on interdisciplinary neurocognitive  studies. It is equipped with the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner,  Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS)  and electroencephalogram (EEG).

In summer of 2024, HKBU will open its new Jockey Club Campus of Creativity,  the new home of the Academy of Music. The new building will bring together a recording studio complex of 13 rooms, including a main scoring stage, control  rooms, tracking rooms and isolation rooms, with state-of-the-art audio equipment  include 72 channel SSL console, Crane Song ADDA converter, Manley EQ and  more, a white box experimental space equipped with immersive audio and visual  equipment, such as Meyersound constellation, Space Map Go, 360º projector  and screen, as well as a film screening studio equipped with Dolby Atmos  surround system, a cinema grade projector, and a 96 fader large DAW console.  The Academy is seeking qualified candidates with expertise in one or more of the  following fields to join our full-time faculty (preference will be given to senior  academics appointable to the rank of Full Professor):

The appointees will conduct research and teach a wide  range of courses offered by the Bachelor of Music (Hons) in Creative Industries  Programme and the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Business Administration (Global  Entertainment) Programme. The Bachelor of Music (Hons) in Creative Industries  Programme offers professional training and new articulation pathway for students  with two options: Scoring for Film, Television and Video Games, and Popular  Music Performance and Songwriting, while the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in  Business Administration (Global Entertainment) Programme is open to business minded students who wish to pursue a career in the entertainment business  and/or arts, cultural and creative industries.
