Research Associate in Spatial Audio, 
AudioLab, Department of Electronic Engineering, University of York

A post-doctoral research position is available to work with the immersive audio team at the AudioLab, Department of Electronic Engineering, University of York. The successful candidate will work with a dynamic team on spatial audio algorithms for next generation immersive audio systems. The Research Associate will be responsible for developing new audio algorithms, immersive audio demonstrations and listening tests as well as producing high quality research outputs in international journals, conferences and symposia. The associate will also contribute to international consortia meetings on the development of next generation audio codecs. The position is for 1 year with potential extension to 3 years.

Role
The main purpose of this role is to develop new immersive audio technologies in collaboration with a major industry partner to the lab. The successful candidate will be expected to have strong knowledge of immersive and interactive audio. Experience with binaural systems and Ambisonics is of particular importance to this position. Duties include:
Design, develop and debug novel spatial audio algorithms for immersive audio applications

• Liase with industry partners on algorithm implementation
• Travel to international meetings to discuss algorithm development and standardisation
• Develop spatial audio project demonstrators in collaboration with other team members
• Design and implement listening tests to support the algorithm development
• Publish research findings in high impact journals
• Present research at international conferences and symposia
• Write and submit grant proposals

Some out of hours work may be required to meet project deadlines and travel requirements.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

• PhD in spatial audio essential
• Experience developing novel spatial audio algorithms
• A background in Ambisonic and binaural audio
• Strong programming skills
• Experience in creating experimental prototypes such as measurement systems or spatial audio testing facilities.
• Experience with interactive audio systems, such as virtual and augmented reality headsets, head-trackers, Unity 3D and other VR and AR technologies is desirable
• Experience with listening test design, implementation and analysis
• Experience presenting research findings at international conferences and symposia
• A track record in publishing academic articles in international journals, conferences and symposia.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team.
