Fwd: International Conference “Musicology Applied To The Concert: Performance Studies At Work”

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

"MUSICOLOGY APPLIED TO THE CONCERT: PERFORMANCE STUDIES AT WORK"

1-3 December 2016

International University of Andalusia

"Antonio Machado" Campus, Baeza, Jaen (Spain)

BACKGROUND

Performance studies are encouraging a massive turning point in
musicology. To such an extent that many scholars are claiming to
rethink a fundamental premise of the discipline, namely the change of
a traditional orientation of music as text to a recent one of music as
performance. This perspective takes then performance as the object of
study and the concert as the privileged space where it takes place.
This conceptual change challenges established methodologies and
scholarly practices, while bringing together more easily musicologists
and musicians. This International Conference aims to impulse the
recent debate promoted by performance studies within Iberian
musicology. It will consist of a series of keynote presentations,
experimental lab-concerts, selected papers and practical workshops.

CONGRESO INTERNACIONAL

"MUSICOLOGÍA APLICADA AL CONCIERTO: LOS ESTUDIOS SOBRE PERFORMANCE EN ACCIÓN"

1- 3 diciembre 2016

a musicólogos e intérpretes.

Fwd: Research Opportunity at the Irish Traditional Music Archive

Dear all,

[Apologies for cross-posting]

The Irish Traditional Music Archive is seeking a post-doctoral
researcher for an EU funded project. We would appreciate if you could
circulate the following amongst colleagues/students who may be
interested:

============================================================================

20 June 2016

Irish Traditional Music Archive : Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions
Individual Fellowship

The Irish Traditional Music Archive / Taisce Cheol Dúchais Éireann
invites Expressions of Interest from post-doctoral researchers
interested in making an application for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie
Actions Individual Fellowship in the non-academic sector. The project
shall focus upon the development of a common linked data framework
that can be used to describe musics which propagate via oral
transmission and social networks.

Despite the recent proliferation of linked data ontologies there is an
apparent need for a vocabulary capable of describing musical entities
and relationships such as those found in the collections of the Irish
Traditional Music Archive (ITMA). ITMA will provide domain specific
expertise and access to its world-renowned resources for the duration
of the project.

Suitable candidates will possess a primary degree (or relevant
experience) in music with additional qualifications in areas such as
information science, library/archive studies, digital humanities
and/or computer science. In addition, they must fulfil the mobility
requirement of the MSCA Fellowship scheme which dictates that
researchers shall not have been based in the host country for more
than 3 of the previous 5 years.

The duration of the project will be two years and shall be based at
ITMA in Dublin.

ITMA is a national reference archive and resource centre for the
traditional song, instrumental music and dance of Ireland. Established
in 1987, the Archive is the first body to be exclusively concerned
with making a comprehensive collection of materials for the
appreciation and study of Irish traditional music and now holds the
largest such collection in existence worldwide. More information on
ITMA and its work can be found at http://www.itma.ie

Prospective candidates are encouraged to visit
https://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/desktop/en/opportunities/h2020/topics/2226-msca-if-2016.html
for detailed information on the award and application process.

To discuss further please contact Piaras Hoban (Digital Projects
Officer) at piaras.hoban@itma.ie

Expressions of Interest must be submitted no later than 17:00 on
Tuesday 12 July.

Audio Engineering and Music Production are inherently technical disciplines, often involving extensive training and the investment of time. The processes involved implicitly require knowledge of signal processing and audio analysis, and can present barriers to musicians and non-specialists. The emerging field of Intelligent Music Production addresses these issues via the development of systems that map complex processes to intuitive interfaces and automate elements of the processing chain.

The event will provide an overview of some of the tools and techniques currently being developed in the field, whilst providing insight for audio engineers, producers and musicians looking to gain access to new technologies. The day will consist of presentations from leading academics, industry keynotes, and additional posters and demonstrations.

We welcome submissions on all aspects of Intelligent Music Production from researchers from any country at all stages of their careers.

Proposals for presentations should be in extended abstract form and PDF format, and be sent to b.deman@qmul.ac.uk. Submissions should be written in 12pt Times New Roman with 1.5 line spacing, and their length including figures and references should not exceed two single column A4 pages. Optional templates can be found above.

The works will be presented as a poster during coffee and lunch breaks. A select number of authors will be invited to present their work orally.

Presenting authors will have to register to the event on http://wimp.eventbrite.co.uk

Further details will be made available on http://www.aes-uk.org/wimp/

For more information about the event, please get in touch with the workshop chairs:

Fwd: FW: ULCC Choir newsletter Summer 2016

ULCC newsletter Summer 2016

Dear Patrons, supporters and music-lovers,

Greetings from all in the choir; we would like to share with you our news in the build up to our busiest time of the year.

Our spring concert coincided with lent and gave us the opportunity to sing, amongst other pieces, Poulenc's wonderful Four motets for the season of lent and Allegri's Misereri mei, Deus.  We dedicated this concert to HealthProm (www.healthprom.org), a charity that works to support vulnerable children and their families in Afghanistan, Central Asia and Russia. We were very gratified to raise money for their work to keep babies out of orphanages in Tajikistan and thank you all who contributed.

Our summer concert 'Sing Away' takes place on Friday, 17th June at 7.30pm in our usual venue, St George's Bloomsbury. Our repertoire will include Verdi's Pater Noster, an extract from William Byrd's Mass for Four Voices, and music by Walton, Gibbons and Elgar. We are delighted to be joined at this concert by a special guest choir, the 'VOCOSingapore Ladies Choir', who will sing music from the Asian and Western world.  We do hope you can join us.

After our summer concert, there is just time to pack our bags before we set off on a summer tour to Northern Italy, our second such tour as the guests of the Collegium Vocale di Crema and the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan. It will be our privilege and our joy to perform music from the English, Russian and Italian sacred and secular repertoire in Mantua, Crema, Lodi and Milan, where Verdi and Monteverdi worked and performed. We anticipate large appreciative audiences, as on our previous tour here, and look forward to sharing wonderful music.

We will post updates on our Facebook and Twitter (@ULCCuk) pages so make sure you like and follow us!

A highlight for the choir and audiences is performing works written by our patrons. This year our repertoire includes works by Janet Wheeler and Colin Sell, and we are currently rehearsing a new work by Natalie, one of our altos!

Thank you so much for your support throughout the year and for attending our concerts; it means a lot to us. We hope to see you on 17th June, or even in Italy!
